La Unesco denunció que la profesión docente sufre una «crisis sin precedentes» en todo el mundo e hizo un llamado a «revalorizarla» y hacerla más atractiva para las nuevas generaciones.
«La profesión docente, a menudo calificada como la profesión más bella del mundo, afronta una crisis sin precedentes», aseguró la directora general de la Unesco, Audrey Azoulay, durante la inauguración de la Cumbre Mundial sobre Docentes que se inauguró en Santiago de Chile.
«Es necesario volver a subrayar la urgencia de revalorizar esta profesión, dado que la tasa de docentes que abandonan la enseñanza se ha duplicado en 7 años», agregó la exministra francesa.
Según un reciente informe del organismo internacional, con sede en París, existe una escasez masiva de profesores en todo el mundo que está poniendo en peligro el acceso a una educación de calidad.
Sería necesario contratar a 44 millones de docentes de aquí al año 2030 para cubrir la educación primaria y secundaria universal, lo que representa un costo anual de 120.000 millones de dólares.
La vicesecretaria general de las Naciones Unidas, Amina J. Mohammed, pidió un compromiso más firme para enfrentar la crisis y alertó de que «los bajos salarios, el crecimiento profesional limitado, la falta de tecnología y, en muchos lugares, la devaluación de la profesión» están empujando a muchos docentes a abandonar la profesión.
«Le estamos pidiendo lo imposible a los profesores: construir el futuro sin herramientas, sin confianza y sin las condiciones que necesitan», aseveró.
El porcentaje de maestros de primaria que abandonan la profesión se ha duplicado, pasando del 4,6 % en 2015 a más del 9 % en 2022, de acuerdo al organismo.
La cumbre, que se celebra por primera en Chile, reunirá hasta el viernes a representantes de la comunidad educativa mundial y organizaciones internacionales y civiles, así como representantes de distintos Gobiernos.
El presidente chileno, Gabriel Boric, afirmó por su parte en la ceremonia de inauguración que «los profesores no viven de aplausos» y pidió «no romantizar el oficio de enseñar ni hablar de lo sacrificado que es si paralelamente no mejoramos sus condiciones».
El mandatario progresista, que dejará el cargo el próximo marzo, hizo también un alegato a favor del multilateralismo y de la educación y declaró que actualmente «enseñar para la paz está en riesgo en el mundo, con líderes que insultan a quienes piensan distinto, que han hecho de la humillación muchas veces un arma».
«Eso nos lo vamos a combatir con palabras, discursos o tweets. La mejor manera es hacerlo con educación, enseñando y dando la oportunidad a los niños a volar y a pensar un mundo mejor», añadió.
