La Secretaría de Salud de Colima confirmó el fallecimiento por rabia humana de un hombre residente de Tonila, Jalisco, y fue agredido por un animal en dicho estado. La dependencia informó que la agresión del animal, cuya especie no especificó, ocurrió a mediados de mayo, tras el paso de varios días presentó síntomas cansancio y entumecimiento en el área de la mordida.
El paciente acudió a una unidad de salud de su entidad, pero posteriormente presentó síntomas neurológicos severos por lo que el 7 de agosto acudió a un hospital privado ubicado en Colima.
El personal médico inició el protocolo de estudio por sospecha de rabia humana y el 17 de agosto ingresó en estado crítico al Hospital General Zona 1 del IMSS para recibir atención, sin embargo, al cabo de unos días falleció.
La dependencia puntualizó que, para su registro, el caso se adjudicará a Jalisco, donde ocurrió la agresión con la que se asocia el origen del contagio, y resaltó que Colima se mantiene sin casos confirmados de rabia humana en residentes desde 1987.
Piden vacunar a animales de compañía
La Secretaría de Salud recordó que la rabia es una enfermedad viral grave que afecta al sistema nervioso central, su transmisión ocurre principalmente a través de la mordedura de un animal infectado o mediante el contacto de su saliva con heridas abiertas o mucosas.
En sus primeras etapas, la rabia puede manifestarse con síntomas inespecíficos como fiebre, dolor de cabeza, malestar general y hormigueo o picazón en la zona de la mordedura.
A medida que la enfermedad progresa, pueden presentarse signos más severos como ansiedad, dificultad para tragar, espasmos musculares, alteraciones neurológicas graves y, en ausencia de tratamiento oportuno, la muerte. La vacunación oportuna de los animales continúa siendo la estrategia preventiva más eficaz para cortar la cadena de transmisión del virus rábico.
Por ello, la Secretaría de Salud de Colima hizo un llamado a toda la población para que mantenga al día la vacunación antirrábica de sus perros y gatos, así como del ganado y otras especies en riesgo.
En el caso de animales de compañía, la vacuna puede aplicarse desde el primer mes de edad y también en hembras gestantes o lactantes, sin representar ningún peligro para su salud.
